Chapter 17:

Home and Gone Again

When we got back, it played out exactly as I had expected. Because of the scratches and us not knowing how, other than a bite, the virus spread, they placed Andy in quarantine. He wasn’t happy and his wife was flat-out pissed about it. They had three small children, and she was not thrilled about being left alone with them for seventy-two hours, during the end of the world. I’m not sure how we landed on seventy-two hours, although it seemed like a sufficient amount of time for any infections to take hold. I can tell you this, the way he smelled was enough to get him locked away for the next year!

After being checked, the rest of us continued to the community supply depot. It was just one of the empty homes, but supply depot sounds much better. We unloaded the supplies and made sure Pat got her hands on the medicine we’d secured. I wanted it in her hands so she could determine who needed what medication. Now, I’m not saying she’s a busybody, but she knows A LOT about the people in our community! I’m positive she could recite, off the top of her head, the medications taken by fifty percent of our community.

I needed to clear my head, so I walked home. I searched my pack for the Reese’s Cups I’d taken from the drugstore and stashed away for Darline. They’re one of her favorites, and the end of the world has been hard on all of us. So a little happy surprise was needed and welcome. I prepared myself to be asked why I didn’t get some cake… she really loves cake! But Reese’s Cups would have to suffice today.

As I unlocked the door, I stuck my head through the opening and announced myself so I didn’t get shot. I was happy to be home and looked forward to surprising Darline with the Reese’s. The past three weeks felt like an immeasurable torrent of shit work that was breaking my back. And, as I pointed out, I’m around fifty years old, so I needed a break and needed one badly!

I entered after realizing that no bullets were coming in my direction and I had no holes in my body. Darline was talking to someone, but because I only heard her voice, I figured she was on her cell or the walkie-talkie and we had no unwelcome visitors.

I yelled a hello, and she immediately came downstairs. When she got to the first floor, she handed me the walkie-talkie and told me it was my brother, Stone. She grabbed me and whispered, “I missed you, but you need to talk to Stone, now.”

Her urgency and insistence wasn’t right, not at all. I grabbed the walkie-talkie from her and as I pressed the talk button, I handed her the snacks I’d lifted from the drugstore. Her smile passed too quickly, and her excitement was much too subdued, which told me something had gone sideways with Stone.
